How to choose the right ERP for a small manufacturer
The best system is the one that fits how you make things. Here is how to find it without the sales theatre.
Choosing a system is one of the biggest decisions a growing manufacturer makes, and one of the easiest to get wrong. The market is noisy, every vendor says yes to everything, and the demo always looks brilliant. Here is how to cut through it.
Start with your process, not the brochure
Before you look at a single system, map how an order actually flows through your business, from quote to dispatch, including the awkward bits everyone works around. The right system has to fit that, not the other way round. If you choose the software first and bend your process to it, you inherit someone else’s idea of how to make things.
The demo trap
Every demo is run on clean data by someone who knows exactly which buttons to press. Yours will not be. Ask to see the parts that are messy in real life: a part with a hundred components, a last-minute order change, a stock count that does not reconcile. How the system handles the mess tells you more than any feature list.
What to actually score
Judge each option on fit with your process, total cost over five years (not just year one), how easily it connects to what you already use, and how good the support is for a firm your size. A system you outgrow in two years is not cheap, however low the sticker price.
Do not forget the data and the funding
Most of the pain in a system project is the data, not the software, so plan to clean it before you move it. And check your Made Smarter eligibility before you spend: a matched grant can cover a serious share of the cost. This is exactly the kind of decision we help manufacturers make independently, with no reseller commission in the mix.
