Three signs your factory is leaking time and money
The costly leaks are the quiet ones. Three signals worth taking seriously before they compound.
Leaks in a factory are rarely dramatic. There is no single moment where money visibly walks out of the loading bay. Instead it drains slowly through small inefficiencies that each look too minor to worry about. Here are three signs worth taking seriously, because they tend to point at something larger underneath.
1. Everything urgent, nothing planned
If your team spends its days firefighting, that is not a sign of a busy factory. It is a sign that the planning upstream is not working. Constant urgency means problems are caught at the last possible moment, when they are most expensive to fix, rather than prevented earlier when they are cheap. A calm operation is usually a well-run one, not a quiet one.
2. The same question, asked over and over
When people keep asking where a job is, whether it has shipped, or which version is right, your systems are not giving them the information they need. Every one of those questions is a small interruption, for the asker and the answerer both. Multiply it across a team across a year and you have a full role’s worth of time spent chasing status that a decent system would simply show on a screen.
3. Your best people are doing your simplest work
This one hides as reliability. Your most experienced person handles the tricky order, fixes the recurring glitch, catches the error before it ships. It feels safe. But if your best people spend their time on things that could be designed out or handled further down, you are paying a premium for work that should not need them, and not getting the higher-value work only they can do. It is one of the most expensive leaks there is.
What to do with this
If one or more feels familiar, the useful next step is not a big transformation programme. It is a clear-eyed look at where the time actually goes, so you can tell a leak worth plugging from a minor annoyance worth leaving alone. Most factories do not need a hundred changes. They need the right handful.
